My Spouse Can’t Hear!!

It’s Friday night, and you and your husband are out with another couple at a nice restaurant. The music is playing and there are several tables nearby filled with laughter and excitement. Your husband does his best to join in the table conversation, but you noticed several responses he gave that demonstrated that he didn’t really hear what was said to him. You feel very frustrated that you can’t make the situation better.

What can the spouse of a hearing impaired person do about the hearing loss? Yes, it is a delicate situation. And yes, hearing loss often brings a defensive attitude. So what can you do?

First, I would recommend not addressing the problem in the heat of hte situation. I often hear comments made by spouses ‘joking’ about the other person’s hearing loss. These comments can really create barriers and eliminate future conversation about hearing loss.

I think the key to effective communication would be demonstrating how much you care about the person instead of the perception of criticism. Timing is critical. And privacy is critical-keep it between the two of you.

When you do have the opportunity, give him a few expamples of what was said to him, and how he responded-not to make him feel bad, but to help him identify the real problem. Then, just back off. Let him get help when is ready. Until he is ready, there are some things you can do as well:

  1. Look at him when you talk to him. (This makes a huge difference in his ability to understand speech).
  2. Speak a little more slowly than usual. (When people have hearing loss, the brain needs a little more time to interpret sound).
  3. Be as patient as you can with your husband

Hearing loss is hard for all parties involved.
